The Cape May County Regular Democratic Organization held a ZOOM presentation on GUN VIOLENCE at 7 p.m. on June 6, 2023.

More than half of us have experienced a gun-related incident and it’s getting worse. The Centers for Disease Control report that 48,830 people died from gunshots in 2021. Most gun deaths are suicides. 

​

In New Jersey, the current death rate is 5.2 per 100,000. While we have strong laws and a low death rate, our neighbors do not. Pennsylvania is the top source of exported crime guns to our state. We will present the unvarnished facts with presenters from Moms Demand Action and the Everytown Survivor Network. They know all too well the cost of gun violence.

On June 8, 2011, Carla Reyes-Miller’s 19-year-old son, Kevin, was shot to death. As a result of this heartbreaking loss, she supports families who have lost loved ones to gun violence. She is a Moms Demand South Jersey Survivor Lead and volunteers for Everytown Survivor Network.  In Kevin’s honor, Carla attended Rowan College, was an honor student, and won the President’s Award for Achievement in Leadership and Service. Carla plans to use her degree to make a difference in the lives of those who are struggling. She was born and raised in Camden, works in the Camden County Department of Children’s Services, and is the mother of five adult children.

Charlene Hoverter honors her sister, Diane, who was killed in 1986, by her work with Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety. She works with survivors and is a fellow with Everytown for Gun Safety. She volunteers as a peer connector with Everytown and speaks with other survivors across the country, helping them on their grief journey.
